Sarah Pickard

Sarah Pickard is Professor of contemporary British Politics and Society at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris where she did her PhD after a BA Degree in Britain. Her research focuses on youth civic and political engagement from a holistic perspective. This research is situated in Youth Studies, Political Sociology and Political Science, addressing the interplay between young people, youth policy, youth culture, political participation and protest in contemporary Britain with broader international perspectives. She developed the concept Do-It-Ourselves (DIO) politics to explain young people’s individual and collective engagement outside institutional politics. Sarah is a convenor of the Political Studies Association (PSA) Young People’s Politics specialist group, a former vice president of the International Sociological Association (ISA) Sociology of Youth research committee.
She is a core team researchers for the Global Youth Participation Index (GYPI) launched in June 2025: https://gypi.epd.eu.
