Résumé

This qualitative study is designed to describe justice-involved youth’s perceptions regarding their interactions with counsellors during their substitute care experiences. Semi-directed interviews were conducted with 20 justice-involved youth between the ages of 16 to 33. A secondary thematic analysis of the data was conducted to explore youth’s perceptions regarding their interactions with counsellors. The results are organized around two main themes: interactions with counsellors that promote trust and receptivity; and interactions with counsellors that provoke resistance. Justice-involved youth discussed how some of their interactions with counsellors contributed to positive or negative substitute care experiences and sometimes led to the acceptance of authority. The implications for practice and avenues for research will be discussed on the basis of an ethic of care approach.
